The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support qualification gives the skills and knowledge to work as Personal Care Assistants or Assistants in Nursing, providing assistance with the activities of daily living. Graduates will be able to work in residential setting such as nursing homes, hostels, supported accommodation and private homes. This new qualification combines Aged Care, Disability and Home and Community Care settings and is the minimum standard required to work in the Care Industry. Depending on which sector of the Care Industry you wish to work in, you can choose units to specialise in Aged Care, Disability or Home and Community Care.

This includes clients undertaking practical tasks in the workplace or work placement environment or training facility so that they can demonstrate competence by applying knowledge and skills in given contexts to workplace/ industry standards. This can include the use of role play where clients undertake the role of a stakeholder and demonstrate competence in simulated workplace conditions/ contexts. Often the assessor will observe performance of tasks to assess whether competency has been demonstrated.
Written assessments
This may include clients undertaking research, interpreting information and writing reports on given topics/ contexts. It could also include completing activities, forms, documents of plans and submitting those.
Third party report
This includes workplace personnel who are suitably qualified/ experienced and in a position to comment on clients’ performance against given criteria. This is often a workplace Supervisor.
Practical activity/ Projects
This includes clients undertaking practical tasks in their own time or the workplace or work placement environment or training facility so that they can demonstrate competence by applying knowledge and skills in given contexts to workplace/ industry standards. This often includes the submission of documentation to demonstrate competence.

Course duration
The course duration is 12 months with students attending face to face classroom based blended delivery or studying self-paced via supported on-line learning, through the On-Line Learning Environment (OLE).

•At your work placement, you’ll get practical, hands on experience under the guidance of your supervisor. Your supervisor will be someone with involvement in the industry, who can mentor you during your placement.

•You’ll also develop practical, on-the-job skills and could make contacts that could help you find a job once you graduate.

It’s our responsibility to find a suitable Host Organisation to carry out your Clinical Placement, there is a Work Placement Team available to give you a hand if you find that you are struggling with your current Host Organisation.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in 15 units of competency:
9 core units;
6 elective units consisting of:
• At least 4 units from those listed in the CHC33015 Qualification Package, with at least 2 units coming from Groups A, B or C in the Qualification Package.
• Up to 2 units from those listed in the Qualification Package, any endorsed Training Package or Accredited Course – these units must be relevant to the work outcome.
Any combination of electives that meets the rules above can be selected for the award of the Certificate III in Individual Support. Where appropriate, electives may be packaged to provide a qualification with a specialisation.
NWCT delivers a program of 16 units of competency, this includes three additional units on top of the qualification package required minimum. This allows for a combined Ageing and Disability specialisation outcome and enhances and improves employment outcomes.
